Abstract

Objective: To evaluate if therapeutic intervention changes body composition of women with climacteric syndrome. Patients and method: A prospective, longitudinal study was done, with measurement of 206 patients who received estrogenic treatment. In the Climacteric Clinic of the Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia two measurements were done of body composition, with DEXA kit, with one-year interval between them. The change in body mass index, weight and body fat of 206 patients was analyzed. The information was collected from April 2004 to June 2005. Results: Body mass index, weight, and total fat expressed in grams and the percentage of fat did not have significant changes in the evaluated patients who remained with the same ranges after receiving estrogenic treatment during one year before and after the study with DEXA. Conclusions: The evaluated patients did not experience changes in the body composition after a year among measurements with DEXA, during which they received estrogenic treatment. It is possible that estrogenic treatment maintains patients in their biophysical variables of body composition and avoids the natural tendency of increasing body fat caused by climacteric syndrome.
