Abstract

This article discusses the economic benefits of applying to become a member of a credit union. Credit unions, unlike banks, do not have to pay most income taxes, allowing them to offer higher interest rates paid to depositors as well as lower rates on loans. Many bankers are upset by this unfair advantage in competition for customers and some have filed lawsuits focused toward credit union membership rules.
