Abstract

The article discusses budget deficits in the Surinamese government and how they were financed. Suriname's non-diversified economic structure has contributed to the country's slow development rate. From 1975 to 1982, the country's capital expenditures were financed mostly from Dutch aid. After aid stopped, budget deficits were financed primarily from central bank credit. Suriname has reached some stability since the early 1990s, but are still experiencing high nominal lending interest rates.
