Abstract

The article focuses on the proposal of the European Union Concerted Action regarding the nature of functional food science in Europe within the context of evidence based nutrition. It was suggested that a food could be considered as functional if it showed an ability to affect beneficially target functions of the body in a manner relevant to an improved state of health or reduction of risk of disease.
