Abstract

To reduce the cost of conducting experimental probability of detection (POD) trials, methods which utilize models to account for factors that influence the inspection reliability are being developed. This paper reports the application of POD modeling to ultrasonic detection of cracks emanating from fastener holes. The differences between ultrasonic responses from EDM notches compared to fatigue cracks are examined, including the effects of natural variation in fatigue cracks and crack closure due to residual stresses. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
