Abstract
- This is a reprint of an article that first appeared in the magazine in October 1977. In the piece the author reports that conservatives elected to the British House of Commons were getting younger and more liberal socially than their older colleagues. He suggests that this crop of younger MPs are the first Tory politicians of the welfare state and notes that while these men are Conservative Party members, they have no connection to the land-owning classes, the traditional Tory base.
