Isolation and Structure Determination of Algicidal Compounds from Ulva fasciata.

The article discusses the result of the study regarding the isolation and structure determination of algicidal compounds from Ulva fasciata, in Japan. Among the seaweeds tested, the green alga Ulva fasciata showed the strongest algicidal activity. The isolation of algicidal compounds was due to the bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract of U. fasciata. The structures of these compounds were determined and showed potent algicidal activity against the red-tide phytoplankton Heterosigma akashiwo.
