Abstract

Abstract: Since the first description of hyperactivity, or psychomotor instability at the end of the 19th century, its designation and conception have evolved. Current classifications (namely DSM IV and ICD 10) emphasize the notion of attention deficit. This paper raises questions about the nosological status of this disorder, its unicity –– considering the comorbidities with various other mental disorders, reported in most cases –– and also about the etiopathogenic role of genetic and neurobiological factors. A “polyfactorial model”, which integrates these factors with psycho-environmental factors, is proposed. A multimodal therapeutic approach is suggested in accordance with this theoretical model.
