Abstract

This article reports that U.S. President George W. Bush is proposing the elimination of several student-aid and college-preparation programs in his $2.77-trillion budget blueprint for 2007, along with a flattening of funds for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Once again, the Education Department, with 42 programs to be cut, would bear the brunt of the governmentwide cutbacks to 141 programs proposed by Bush. Those cuts, along with the flatlining of the NIH's budget, only years after it was doubled by the Congress, are an attempt by Bush to trim domestic programs as he tries to bring the federal budget deficit under control and make his tax cuts permanent. A program for community colleges to train workers in high-demand fields, like health care and information technology, would be expanded.
