Abstract

This article discusses confusion over school hours in New York City public schools for tutoring sessions supplied under a teacher's contract. Time changes to school hours under this contract have left many parents frustrated and has caused transportation problems for students. Tutoring sessions will require students struggling academically to stay late after school to work in small groups with teachers. Some parents believe that this system will only help students in schools that do not have problems with overcrowding. New York Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg support the contract, and believe that extra time at the end of the school day for specialized instruction will help struggling students.
