Abstract

This article deals with popular etymology and the Arabic linguists. interpretations concerning derivation of words used in Arabic. First, the concept of popular etymology in linguistics, and the status of this concept in Arabic philology are explained. Popular etymology is the process of assimilation into language of the words borrowed from a foreign language to mother tongue by people through establishing similarity with known words. Although it has not been considered by traditional Arabic linguists as method of word formation, it is really a method of word formation. Popular etymology is part of the fact of comparison in linguistics. The derivation errors of linguists is, though not a method of word formation, like popular etymology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
