Abstract

This article profiles the media market in Salt Lake City, Utah. In early January 2006, a local theater refused to show the acclaimed film Brokeback Mountain, which is often referred to as the gay cowboy love story. The city is home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and it is considered an influential institution where a cultural and social divide between Mormons and non-Mormons remains. When it comes to local media, the LDS church's influence is profound. It owns one of the city's two daily newspapers, the Deseret Morning News, which is published under the umbrella of the Deseret News Publishing Co. through its broadcasting and satellite arm, Bonneville International Corp., the church is also the area's largest radio broadcaster, with the No. 1 radio station, and it owns one of the market's top-rated television stations, NBC affiliate KSL-TV. The Salt Lake City market ranked 36th in the country.
