Abstract

The article presents a study of Italian intravenous drug users (IDU) with Human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) and coinfected with HIV-1. The authors investigated the rate of HTLV -II infection in IDU screened for HIV-1, HTLV-1 and HTLV-II through real-time polymerase chain reaction screening of HTLV-II proviral load. Increased incidence of liver disease and hepatitis C virus positivity among coinfected IDU was found.
