Factors contributing to the investment risks associated with smaller mining companies are mentioned. Stock prices for Newmont Mining Corp. and Freeport-McCoRan Copper & Gold Inc. have risen 40% and 75% in the past year. The outlook for Bema Gold Corp., Hecla Mining Co., Placer Dome Inc., Barrick Gold Corp., Eldorado Gold Corp., and Yamana Gold Inc. is mentioned, as well as consolidation in the Canadian and U.S. industries.
