Abstract

This article provides background information on Avian flu, a generic term for any number of influenzas that can arise in and infect birds. The first outbreak of H5N1 or bird flu took place in South Korea in December 2003. In this article, the author addresses some myths, as well as considers several facts, about Avian flu. He attempts to trace its origin and its impact on human health particularly the poultry industry. The author asks whether Avian flu is a random act of nature or just another man-made disaster.
