Abstract

Reports that Zhao Yan, a Chinese reporter for "The New York Times," was indicted on charges of disclosing state secrets to the newspaper and on a lesser charge of fraud. Zhao worked in the paper's Beijing bureau and has spent 15 months in prison without a hearing. The formal indictment is important because the move on charges relating to state secrets is usually tantamount to conviction in China. Zhao, who denies the charges, could face a minimum of 10 years in prison.
