Abstract

The article notes that Mark Griffiths, professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Trent University, calls so-called instant-win promotions by businesses gambling precursors. Studies show that the earlier a child begins to gamble, the more likely he or she is to develop problems. The incidence of problem gambling in Britain is higher among adolescents than adults. The author suggests that Tessa Jowell, secretary of state responsible for the Gambling Act, ask the new Gambling Commission to turn its attention to this epidemic.
