Abstract
- The article reports on the results of a recent study of 2,100 Britons that found that more than a third of people in Great Britain buy certain titles solely to look intelligent. Comments regarding the issue from Random House Inc. editor Mark Tavani. The author suggests that certain titles are notorious for having sales figures that belie their readability, such as Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time," and Michael Faber's "The Crimson Petal and the White."
