Abstract
- Focuses on the notion of resistance as it relates to the performance of Dan ethnic and religious identity in turn-of-the-millennium in the Ivory Coast. Controversies in which some Dan interpret local performance events as expressions of resistance to institutional hegemonic power structures; Differences of opinion that demonstrate the centrality of performance to local identity negotiations; Implications for the crisis of national identity politics that in 2002 contributed to the civil war that divided the country.
