Abstract
- Works of history are social constructions influenced by a host of factors that are both particular to the historian and endemic to the environment within which he or she researches and narrativises the past. Focusing on how academic historians have gone about constructing their identity since the end of the 19th century, this paper is a further contribution to the debate that continues to rage between historians and philosophers of history about the epistemological foundations and status of historical knowledge.
