Abstract

The article reports on rioting, mostly instigated by young poor Muslims, in France. Some Islamic organizations such as the Tabligh sect of Islam which supports adherence to Islam along with disengagement from society, are encouraging the youths to stop their violent behavior. Gangs have burned thousands of cars and attacked entire neighborhoods. The groups that advocate peace also believe that Muslims should identify themselves with their religion and not with citizenship in any particular country. This is a concern for Europe's secular democracies. Countries including France, Germany, Great Britain, and the Netherlands have never successfully integrated their Muslim minorities.
