Abstract

The article focuses on the work of Geoffrey Canada, CEO of Harlem Children's Zone Inc. (HCZ). HCZ serves 8,600 low-income children on 60 New York City blocks with smart-parenting classes, all-day preschools and a K-12 charter school. It also provides tutoring and mentoring and antiviolence initiatives. The organization delivers its programs with the help of a skilled staff, wealthy backers and Canada, a driven leader with rare crossover appeal.
