Abstract

The article presents information on new technologies developed for optimizing hydrogen and energy supplies and demand in refinery. Increase in hydrogen production from 5% to 30% may be possible depending on the age, extent of previous de-bottlenecking work, utility availability, constraints of emission permits, and the flexibility of the refinery with respect to product hydrogen pressure, steam production and design margins. A hydrogen steam reformer plant can be developed to produce high-pressure steam and power in addition to hydrogen, thereby allowing the refiner to optimize its total energy balance and efficiency by critically evaluating the replacement of aging utility systems.
