Abstract

The objective was to evaluate the relationship between resilience and demographic variables (age, gender, marital status, religiosity) with risk factors (life events, stress, depression) and protection factors (social support, hope) in aging. The following instruments were used: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Inventory of Stressful Events, Geriatric Depression Scale, Resilience Scale, Herth Hope Scale, and Social Support Network Inventory. Participants were 508 elderly people with a mean of 71.16 years. The indices of resilience, hope and social support were satisfactory. The events that affected personal well-being were highlighted, and 23.6% of the elderly presented depressive symptoms. Age correlated negatively with resilience and hope. The multiple linear regression test resulted in a model in which 22% of the resilience index was explained by the variables hope and depression. Longer-lived seniors indicated increased mental health impairments, so resilience-promoting practices should be favored with this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
