Abstract

The article reports on the dismissal of a lawsuit by a North Dakota judge that was brought by a 78-year-old man claiming that state prohibition against female circumcision should apply to males also. In a written opinion, the judge wrote that Mervin Gajewski of Watford City wasn't harmed by the law and therefore, couldn't sue. North Dakota and the surrounding states of the Midwest possess the nation's highest male circumcision rate--78 percent. That compares to about 56 percent throughout the U.S., according to a 2003 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey. Gajewski plans to appeal the case to the North Dakota Supreme Court.
