Abstract
- Beckettian literature allows us to explore the boundaries of textual intelligibility through stylistic choices that could be considered extreme. In this article, we will examine how a seemingly unconventional use of personal and demonstrative pronouns can address a stylistic approach to referential ambiguity, in turn contributing to a philosophy and poetics of the indeterminate. Through a detailed analysis of instances of vague reference in the incipit of Beckett's novel "The Unnamable," we will elucidate how the Irish author employed vague demonstrative pronouns to delay and thus suspend a thematic reference that cannot be named, and therefore identified, for several reasons. This study will explore the limits of reference, opening avenues for the interpretation of vague referents, whether in literary or artistic texts, as well as in other types of texts.
