Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of fennel essential oil on Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and mung bean seeds. For this purpose, fennel oil was diluted and 6 different concentrations of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 20 µL/L were prepared. In addition, mung bean seeds with different levels of contamination with the eggs of the pest were used. The experiments were continued until all insects emerged from the seeds. Sprout lengths of germinated seeds according to different contamination levels were found to be 6.77 cm for clean seed, 6.42 cm for 1-3 egg contamination, 5.99 cm for 4-6 egg contamination, 5.68 cm for clean seed, 6.59 cm for 1-3 egg contamination and 6.02 cm for 4-6 egg contamination. According to the results obtained in this study, fennel oil may have an effect on the increase of the pest population. Research on the extraction of essential oils in pure form and their subsequent use against stored product pests will increase the potential for the use of essential oils in pest control. In addition, more research should be conducted to determine whether essential oils of plant origin have adverse effects on the environment and human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
