Abstract

In this study, the issue of state and duty is examined in the context of Aristotle's Politics. Aristotle claims that the ultimate goal of human life is 'happiness' and therefore defines the ultimate goal of the state as enabling a just and happy life. Indeed, in Aristotle's eyes, the state is, in a sense, the ground for human self-realization; it is responsible for not only the material but also the spiritual existence of the individual because the main issue is not only living, but also 'living well'. According to Aristotle, the state is responsible for many duties, both to meet the needs of the individual and to achieve moral competence, and to ensure the well-being and happiness of society. In other words, Aristotle's 'state' is responsible for many areas, most of which are considered primary public services today, such as defense, security, justice, education, health, public works, agriculture, trade and economy, for the ultimate happiness of the individual and the public.
