Abstract

The present report describes the advances in chronic pain management through non-invasive and non-pharmacological procedures. It describes the nature of chronic pain and the theoretical approaches to its explanation and management -such as the gate theory and the polyvagal theory-. In this way, we propose some contributions to its study from the psychophysiology field. Some biomarkers that have proven helpful for its evaluation, such as peripheral temperature, Interleukin-6, and heart rate variability, were discussed. These biomarkers can be helpful in evaluating the effectiveness of psychological or non-pharmacological interventions for pain reduction, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or biofeedback. Finally, we emphasize the possible implications of these interventions within translational research as a route to achieve increased openness of the psychologist's work within healthcare settings.
