Abstract

One of the most important problems in the century we live in is the environmental pollution. With the growth of industrial production, the amount of industrial wastewater released is also increasing. Heavy metals found in wastewater are one of the main causes of toxicity. For this reason, determining the effects of wastewater on the environment and living things is becoming increasingly important. One of the effective methods used to reveal these effects is seed germination and plant growth experiments. The dye industry wastewater used in this study was studied at six different concentrations from 100% to 1%. The toxic effects of water samples were tried to be revealed by testing them on plant seeds of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. cv. H-2274 (tomato) and Capsicum annuum L. cv. Ilıca 256 (pepper) belonging to the Solanaceae family. It has been determined that wastewater negatively affects both germination and development due to increased concentration. It was determined that dye wastewater had a toxic effect by stopping seed germination at high levels (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) in both plant seeds tested. In the 1% and 10% series of wastewater application, it was determined that Vigor Indexes (VI) and root lengths decreased compared to the control. A parallel situation was not observed in all series in the fresh and dry weights of roots, hypocotyls and cotyledons; while a decrease was observed in some, the values remained the same in others. Significant increases were determined at some concentrations compared to the control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
