Abstract
- Archaeological excavation conducted at the archaeological site of Keyakekuduke Beacon Tower in Yuli County, Xinjiang, has resulted in the recovery of an extensive collection exceeding 1,500 artifacts and specimens, which encompasses wooden slips, paper documents, and a myriad of other cultural relics. Through a rigorous and specialized analysis of the textual references pertaining to "hemp" and "wild hemp" within the documents excavated, in conjunction with a meticulous examination of hemp-derived artifacts and botanical specimens recovered from the site, it found out that the term "hemp" used in the documents corresponds to the plant species Cannabis sativa L., whereas "wild hemp" denotes the species Apocynum venetum L.. This discovery not only provides reliable documentary evidence for augmenting the understanding of the ancient utilization patterns of Cannabis sativa L. and Apocynum venetum L. in Xinjiang, but also serves as a vital primary source for advancing the study of military life and practices along the Tang Dynasty frontiers.
