Abstract

Adrenal tumors have been increasing in dogs, as has their surgical treatment. The objectives of this study were to describe the epidemiological characteristics and favorable outcomes of 136 dogs that underwent elective adrenalectomy. A retrospective study was conducted between February 2018 and May 2024 at VetUnity Especialidades (São Paulo). Among the 136 dogs with adrenal tumors, 71.3% were female and the mean age was 10.5 ± 2.2 years. One hundred and eighteen dogs were purebred, with Shih Tzus (31.6%) being the most affected, followed by Lhasa Apsos and Yorkshires. The mean body weight was 11.8 ± 7.2 kg. Cushing's syndrome was diagnosed in 29.4% of dogs, and in 70.6%, adrenal tumors were incidental findings. Tumor size ranged from 10 to 62 mm and neoplastic thrombus was observed in 7.6% of cases. A total of 128 unilateral adrenalectomies and 8 bilateral adrenalectomies (in two surgical stages) were performed. The histopathological classification of the 144 tumors was carcinoma in 61.2%, adenoma in 20%, pheochromocytoma in 16%, and collision tumors in 2%. Anesthetic complications included hypotension, hypertension, and arrhythmias, particularly in cases of pheochromocytoma. Five dogs (3.67%) died postoperatively due to pulmonary thromboembolism, pancreatitis, or acute renal failure. Our study showed a large number of adrenal tumors in small-breed dogs, highlighting adrenocortical carcinomas, even in asymptomatic dogs. The low mortality rate observed in this cohort reinforces the importance of surgical treatment for this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
