Abstract

The article discusses the role of identity politics in democratizing democracy, challenging the criticism that it undermines community, rational communication, and solidarity. Drawing on radical democratic and standpoint theories, the author argues that identity politics disrupts hegemonic discourse, making power politics reasonable when following minority standpoints. The tension between power and reason, particularism and universalism, is central to identity politics and democracy, necessitating an ongoing oscillation between the two. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding identity politics as an interplay between reason and power, highlighting the need for inclusive deliberation and the development of strong objectivity to overcome epistemic ignorance and promote democratization.
