Abstract

The article discusses the contested nature of neoliberalism and the critiques of democracy within neoliberal thought. It focuses on the writings of Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, and James Buchanan to develop a critical account of neoliberal thought. The article highlights the neoliberal critique of democracy, the proposed reforms, and the challenges in theorizing a politics of neoliberal transformation. It concludes by pointing out the dilemmas faced by neoliberals in implementing their theoretical frameworks in practice. The article also suggests a potential link between neoliberalism and right-wing populism in terms of their shared desire for political rupture. [Extracted from the article]
