Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study one aspect of Aristotle's use of the Greek language: the indirect interrogative clauses. Firstly, we briefly review the juxtaposition-coordination-subordination relationships in the Indo-European and ancient Greek languages, and identify five hypotactic markers, following Humbert. Then, we examine Aristotle's Categories to collect its interrogative clauses and analyse their paratactic and hypotactic relationships to their main clauses. There are several cases of indirect interrogative clauses and the analysis of their hypotactic markers could be useful to increase the knowledge of Aristotle's language. Lastly, we propose the hypothesis that the indirect interrogative clauses' recurrence could be due to the transformation into treaties of a dialogical manner of philosophising.
