Abstract

This article empirically contrasts relevant hypotheses to explain the distribution of lynchings in Mexican municipalities during the period 2015-2020. Considering the dynamics of violence derived from organized crime in Mexico, it seeks to determine whether these events of collective violence at the municipal level are related to the presence of criminal organizations. Likewise, two explanatory hypotheses of lynching that have prevailed in the specialized literature are tested: the deficient presence of the state and the accumulation of socioeconomic disadvantages. This is variable-oriented research for which a negative binomial model is used. The results indicate that the presence of criminal organizations does correlate with lynching, although higher levels of poverty and state precariousness do so as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
