Abstract

The present research sought to investigate the grammatical cohesion signaled, in Libras, through substitution. The theoretical framework is largely based on the discursive considerations of Halliday and Hasan (1976), as they present the following types of cohesion: (i) referential, (ii) substitutive, (iii) elliptical, (iv) conjunctive and (v) lexical, covering any natural languages. In this sense, through the qualitative methodology, an analysis was made of a narrative textual excerpt from videos produced by a deaf person who is a native signer and fluent in Libras, related to his life experiences, extracted from the Corpus da Libras organized by the Federal University of Santa Catarina, more specifically from the Deaf Reference Project. The grammatical cohesion of substitution, chosen to be the center of this discussion, proved to be extremely productive, for performing the use of incorporation or role shift. In short, it was possible to conclude that these cohesion mechanisms help the signer to produce statements that support a clearer understanding of the text by the deaf. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
