Abstract

This empirical study aims to account for the developmental dimension of the activity of crisis team members participating in nuclear crisis management exercises. It is part of the empirical and technological programme of the "course of action", which has a double aim: the production of knowledge on human activity and the design of training situations that favour major transformations in the activity of the actors. Based on filmed observations of crisis management exercises by a team of experts, and self-confrontation interviews, the course of experience of the team members is analysed. The results highlight (i) the process of constructing meanings during a crisis exercise and more specifically the formulation of provisional hypotheses and (ii) a 'bridging' between the experience of the exercise situation and the experience of a previous exercise. The discussion focuses on the role of provisional hypotheses in relation to the notion of abduction. The paper concludes by putting this preliminary study into perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
