Abstract

The Brazilian prison system faces several challenges, such as overcrowding, precarious physical structures, unhealthy conditions, and difficulties in reintegrating prisoners into society, in addition to violence and violations of rights. This context is a favorable environment for physical and mental illness. It is in this scenario that female prison police officers (PP) perform the role of custodians, being responsible for maintaining order and integrity of inmates in female prison units. Female prison police officers face a unique process of subjectivation resulting from their experience in prison, dealing with stress, work overload, among other problems. Thus, this research aimed to understand the impacts of prison work on the subjectivation processes of female prison police officers in a female prison unit located in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. The methodology adopted consisted of applying semi-structured interviews with twelve female prison police officers, addressing aspects of their routine, affects, production of subjectivity, family life, and interpersonal relationships before and after insertion into the prison system. The results indicate processes of subjectivation that transcend the work environment, suggesting a specific way of being and acting, characterized by a permanent state of vigilance, a feeling of insecurity, stress, aggressiveness, and the naturalization and trivialization of violence.
