Abstract

The novel "When the mountains walk" by Youssef El Maimouni explores the participation of Moroccan soldiers in the Spanish Civil War, highlighting their role as forgotten victims and perpetrators of violence. It shows the discrimination suffered by Moroccans in the war and how it persists today, through the Moroccan narrative perspective. The novel seeks to change the perception of Moroccan immigrants in current society, nuanced the image of the "wild Moor" spread by Francoist propaganda. Different perspectives on historical memory in Spain are analyzed, from the Transition to democracy to noir novels as a means of inquiry into recent history, exploring themes such as stereotypes in the Republican ballads and sexual violence against women in the Spanish Civil War.
