Abstract

The state of war in Syria forces people to migrate. The outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011 resulted in Syrians migrating to Turkey. According to December 22, 2022, data, there are 3 million 543 thousand 837 Syrians with temporary protection status in Turkey. Approximately 88 thousand of them live in Kilis. The ratio to the local population is about 60 per cent. However, this ratio has been observed to be around 97 per cent in 2017. This study investigated why the Syrian, which has significantly decreased, migrated from Kilis. The aim of the study is to determine whether their expectations are met in the provinces when they leave Kilis. Due to its relevance to the subject, interviews were conducted with Syrians who had migrated from Kilis using qualitative research methods. The data collection instrument used was a semi-structured interview. The purposive sampling technique was used within the scope of the study. The result of the research showed that Syrians had problems making a living due to the lack of job opportunities in Kilis, and they found the solution by going to another place where they could make a living thanks to their social capital. In addition, it was also concluded that although they can make a living where they go, Syrians do not fully feel the belonging they feel in Kilis. Finally, although there are studies about Syrians in Kilis, none has addressed the reasons for the migration of Syrians living in Kilis to other places. In this way, the unique value of the study becomes apparent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
