Abstract

The solidarity initiatives that proliferated in urban neighborhoods during the lockdown period decreed at the onset of the coronavirus crisis have generated significant interest within the field of sociology. The facilitating causes that propelled these social processes, as well as those that hindered or thwarted their development, remain subjects of debate. This contribution presents a qualitative analysis of local mutual support initiatives that emerged during that period in three Madrid neighborhoods with differing average incomes, urban profiles, and resident populations: Orcasur, Prosperidad, and Malasaña. The analysis of 32 semi-structured interviews (18 individual and 14 group) conducted two years after the lockdown with residents and key informants in the three mentioned neighborhoods highlights the prominent role of neighborhood associations, informal groups, and volunteers in driving cooperative practices aimed at ensuring the supply of essential goods and the provision of essential services. Similarly, it is important to note the significance of various spontaneous mutual support initiatives led by neighbors in certain proxemic contexts (buildings, streets), as well as the relevance of local shops' actions in the three studied contexts.
