There are nearly 3 billion people exposed to biomass smoke worldwide. Biomass represents approximately 50% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in developing countries; mainly affecting women, who are exposed during all stages of their life. The cumulative effect and inhalation characteristics determine a predominantly small airway condition, different from the radiological findings of COPD in smoking patients.
