Abstract

Introduction. Primary Health Care constitutes the first level of health care, coordinating the care provided to the population by the Public Health System in Brazil. The National Curricular Guidelines play an important role in critical training aligned with the assumptions of the Public Health System and Primary Health Care. However, many propositions in the National Curricular Guidelines end up not being considered in practice. Objectives. The aim is to examine how health courses at a federal public university in northeastern Brazil incorporate Public Health System guidelines into their educational initiatives. Method. Exploratory and qualitative, characterized as a multiple case study in which each course was considered a "case." The IRAMUTEQ software was used as a data analysis tool combined with Content Analysis (thematic analysis) with a view to identifying core meanings/themes in the analyzed materials and, based on the presence or frequency of meanings, identifying the object under analysis, which, in this project, is Primary Health Care, and the way in which this object presents itself. Results. The course with the highest percentage of activities dedicated to Primary Health Care was Public Health, while the one with the least was medicine. The courses that focused most on Primary Care, Public Health System guidelines and the expanded concept of health were Public Health, Nursing and Speech Therapy. In general, attendance and content related to Primary Health Care in courses is low. Such results demonstrate a tension between the expanded concept of health and the biomedical model, with a greater focus on menus that address specialized content and secondary and tertiary care levels. Conclusions. It is necessary for new investigations to be carried out in order to deepen the analysis of curricular changes due to the preparation of professionals to work within the scope of Primary Health Care.
