Abstract
- The Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of atomic-bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. The group, known as Hibakusha, emerged after the 1945 U.S. nuclear attacks in Japan and played a crucial role in establishing an international taboo on the use of nuclear weapons. The award comes at a time when nuclear powers are modernizing their arsenals and new nations are seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to around $1 million. [Extracted from the article]
