Abstract
- This article discusses the representation of the Hui ethnic minority, also known as Chinese Muslims, in Chinese mainstream cinema. It highlights the challenges faced by Hui filmmakers in terms of the subjugation of minority ethnicities and the erasure of their religious identity. The article also explores the emergence of a new genre called Hui microfilm, which aims to challenge these representations and assert Hui subjectivity. It discusses specific scenes from microfilms that depict the daily lives and struggles of Hui Muslims, emphasizing the importance of Islam in Hui identity. The decline of Hui microfilm production is attributed to factors such as the difficulty for independent filmmakers to make a profit and tightened regulation of online content. Despite these challenges, Hui filmmakers continue to work on projects that explore Hui culture and collaborate with filmmakers from other ethnic minorities. [Extracted from the article]
