Abstract

The use of fiber optic sensor technology has rapidly evolved over the past decade, involving a variety of fields ranging from medical and engineering applications. increasingly used in places where traditional sensors are unable to work due to difficult conditions, Such as high temperatures, large sizes, and effects of electromagnetic fields. Unfortunately, the evidence of its use in medical and engineering is still unclear and scarce. This article aims to evaluate the current unique characteristics of the Fabry-Perot (FP) fiber optic sensor feasibility projects and to discuss a number of challenges related to the deployment of the different types of fiber optic sensors, their operation and application feature the hopes of empowering and inspiring possible future work. This research framework for scoping reviews methodology summarizes the results of 41 research papers over the past years, from 2024, outlining the research trend in medical and engineering applications. A literature search was performed, and an assessment was based on their content and significance. Potential applications of fiber optic sensor technology are broad. Based on the articles identified, Fiber optic sensor technology is classified into two categories: (1) applications in engineering, which have shown the highest contribution, and (2) applications in medicine. Although there has been a significant increase in the number of publications on the use of Fiber optic sensors within the last five years, there is, however, limited discussion to address Its actual engineering application combined with its medical application. It is evident that Fiber optic sensor technology needs to be further explored to focus more on doctors performing precise operations in hard-to-reach places, as well as in engineering applications such as measuring temperatures in reactors. It is envisaged that with sufficient development, the application of Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensors, will be promising and will improve their effectiveness, especially in medical and engineering applications.
