Abstract
- Lipoprotein (a), also known as Lp(a), is a type of lipoprotein that is structurally similar to low-density lipoprotein (LDL). It consists of an LDL-like particle with a specific protein called apolipoprotein (a) attached to it. Elevated levels of Lp(a) in the blood are significantly involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis and aortic stenosis, by contributing to inflammation, oxidative stress, and calcification. Numerous epidemiological studies confirm the strong association between high Lp(a) levels and an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke, highlighting the importance of including Lp(a) screening in comprehensive cardiovascular health evaluations. The positive correlation between high Lp(a) levels and increased cardiovascular risk underscores the need for developing appropriate and effective treatments to lower Lp(a) levels in patients.
