Abstract

This article explores the relationship between genre and identity in contraceptive health discourses. It examines different types of contraceptive texts, such as patient education materials and promotional materials, and analyzes their inclusivity and accessibility. The study focuses on contraception patient education materials from Planned Parenthood and identifies common genre features. It also discusses the need for inclusive language for marginalized communities and the lack of queer critiques in the fields of Technical and Professional Communication and Rhetoric of Health and Medicine. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing health disparities in marginalized communities and concludes by discussing a study analyzing online patient education materials on contraception from Planned Parenthood's website. The study analyzes the frequency of different codes used in the texts and highlights the importance of consistent and inclusive language when discussing sex acts and gender. The study suggests that including more information about reproductive health considerations beyond the gender binary would promote greater reproductive health literacy for people of all genders. The author also emphasizes the importance of access to accurate information about contraception and reproductive health, particularly in the current political climate. The text includes a list of academic articles and resources related to reproductive justice, contraception, transgender health care, and technical communication, providing diverse perspectives on these topics. Additionally, the text provides a codebook that categorizes information about contraception for research purposes, aiming to provide a comprehensive framework for analysis.
