Abstract
- Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness of hearing, balance, language and speech skills of parents of children aged 3--12 years with hearing loss with and without special needs. Method: The Parental Awareness Screening Scale for Hearing, Balance, Language and Speech Skills in Children with Hearing Loss (PASBSS) was used. The scale was administered to parents face-toface and online and data were collected. The scale is a 5-point Likerttype scale consisting of a total of 21 questions. Statistical analyses were performed with IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program version 21.0. Results: When parental awareness in terms of speech-language skills was compared, it was concluded that 63.2% of parents with children with special needs and 90.9% of those without special needs had high awareness. 81.8% of parents of children with special needs and 90.9% of those without special needs had high auditory awareness. In balance awareness, which is another subheading, 36.4% of parents with children with special needs and 63.6% of those without special needs have high awareness. Again, 63.6% of the parents with children with special needs and 63.6% of those without stated that they provided parental support. A significant difference (p=0.005) was found in the last subheading, parents' recognition of symptoms, and it was found that none of the parents of children with special needs and 63.6% of those without special needs had high awareness. Conclusion: A significant difference (p=0.005) was found in the two groups in terms of parents' awareness of symptoms in their children with and without children with special needs with hearing loss. There is a need to increase the awareness of parents in all developmental areas of their children for the development of children with hearing loss, especially children with special needs. In addition, for each developmental stage, the relevant specialist and the parent should be in cooperation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
